I discovered Glee a few weeks ago. How has this show existed for three years and I never saw it? Or, more importantly, heard it? Because, I have to say, they had me at 'Don't Stop Believing'. And, because I have that illness that usually forces me to ship the primary canon pairings, I've been devouring (or trying to, see below) Finn/Rachel fic for days.

I was spoiled by years in the Lois and Clark fandom: having the stories and the community centered around a very small handful of websites makes it easy to find good fics and to make fandom friends. But with Glee, I've had to resort to skipping around, which is just about as bad as it sounds. There is some good stuff, but, man, it's tough going. I've looked a bit at communities here on LJ, but I haven't found anything that feels right. And, besides, apparently everyone uses tumblr now? I haven't even figured out how to navigate that place. If anyone wants to take pity on me and provide a tumblr tutorial, I'll happily take it! Or, for that matter, Glee fic recs, if any of you happen to be fans. I'll take those, too.

Speaking of L&C, all this can't-find-a-community-or-decent-fics problem that I've been having with Glee lately really made me miss my L&C days and friends. I started thinking about writing something, and, to that end, I put together a little ficathon on the boards. I was really hoping that I would find some inspiration as part of that process, but my muse seems to have completely gone AWOL. I can't find even the smallest plot bunny. It makes me a little sad. It's the fandom version of 'you can't go home again.'

I almost always go for the conventional pairings, like Lois and Clark (although, really, who else could they be with? Lois and Jimmy? Clark and Cat? Um, no), so it may come as no surprise that I have once again fallen in love with a rather obvious 'ship.

I've been bitten by the Ten/Rose bug. Hard. My Who friends? FIC RECS, PLEASE. Begging you!

This is really not going to be good for my studies.

Sharing fics that made me say "WOW!" Please note that sometimes I like stories without happy endings.

Gilmore Girls
ask me, i won’t say no (how could i?) by dollsome. Rory/Jess, post-series. 1387 words. I never cared much either way about Rory and Jess, but this story made me understand why Rory likes him. And I really admire the author's light hand with words.

Anne of Green Gables
The Saddest Lines by athousandwinds. Anne/Gilbert, post Rilla of Ingleside. 824 words. This author must be getting whispers from Anne in her dreams.

Pirates of the Carribean
Shrouded Heart by dollsome. Set between Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest. 3885 words. Elizabeth has a lot of time to think about her happy ending.

Harry Potter
Tiny Metal Heart by sundancekid. 2027 words, set during Deathly Hallows. Hermione destroys the Horcrux in Hufflepuff's cup.

Eat Crow by 2ndary_author. Approx. 2800 words, set during the series. Mal tells war stories.

The Assembly of the Righteous by patita_fea. 2200 words, post Serenity (movie). The end of the story.

Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit
One Day (five times gone) by surreallis. Elliott/Olivia. Approx. 1700 words, set at an unspecified time during the series. I love the depth of the relationship between these two, the way it goes right up to the line but not over it, because that's just not who they are. This fic highlights that in a way I admire.

Doctor Who / Gone With the Wind (seriously)
The Yankee's Loot by yahtzee63. Approx 11000 words. I'm just going to copy the author's synopsis here, because it hits the nail on the head: "The Tenth Doctor has known many Companions over the years, and thinks he's ready for almost anything. And then, God help him, he picks up Scarlett O'Hara."

Allow me to take a moment to rant about Kevin Sullivan.

This is the gentleman that gave us two lovely movies in the 80s about Anne of Green Gables. They starred the incomparable Megan Follows, and they were fairly faithful to Lucy Maud Montgomery's books. Mr. Sullivan was a star.

In 2000, said star faded somewhat when he decided to make a third AoGG movie and wrote his own plot instead of using LMM's. The result was a decidedly un-Anne-ish movie, but at least he didn't mess with the back story.

But now the man has the gall to make a prequel which seems to not be a prequel at all but instead an alternate universe in which Anne isn't an orphan!

I realize that LMM has been dead for over 65 years and that Mr. Sullivan (presumably) now owns the rights to AoGG. Legally he can do what he wants. But morally? I don't think he has the right to create a story out of thin air and slap the AoGG name on it. If he's so keen to write a story about an-orphan-who-is-apparently-not-an-orphan, for heaven's sake he should give it an original name.* Oh, but I forgot, that would never do as it wouldn't have instant money making value. And that, of course, is the entire point.

Note to self: If you ever write a series of books that is beloved worldwide (a la LMM, C.S. Lewis or J.K. Rowling), keep a tight rein on the rights and instruct heirs to do the same, lest your brain child be sullied by a soulless tv producer who doesn't have the chops to create his own damn story.

*P.S. Yes, I do realize this is somewhat hypocritical in light of the fact that I am a fanfic writer. But (1) I don't make money from my stories and (2) L&C fans the world over - or indeed anywhere at all - are not under the impression that my tales are canon. Many people who watch Mr. Sullivan's AoGG movies think exactly that.

Is it just me, or do some aspects of the Doctor Who S3 episode "The Sound of the Drums" bear a striking resemblance to the Lois and Clark S4 episode "Lois and Clarks"? Specifically the whole national-leader-hypnotizes-the-country-with-a-phone-signal thing.

And, goodness, David Tennant is awesome.

I love The Hobbit. LOTR, not so much. I just couldn't love them and I've never been sure why. So when the LOTR movies came out, I liked them as movies and was in awe of how well executed they were, but there was always the thought in the back of my mind - why didn't Peter Jackson make The Hobbit, too? So you can imagine how excited I was when I learned several months ago that there would be one after all! But I haven't been paying much attention to the details, so I was happy today to read a chat with Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro (the director, who I've never heard of in my life) about the new movies.

Things I learned:

Guillermo del Toro looks eeriely like Peter Jackson.

Ian McKellan will be back as Gandalf! In fact, per del Toro: Unequivocally, every single actor that originated a role in the Trilogy will be asked to participate and reprise it. If health, availability or willigness become obstacles – and only in that case recasting would be considered. Which is awesome news, but I do have to say that Ian Holm might be a tad old for Bilbo.

First movie is scheduled to release Dec 2011 - sad that it's going to be such a long time. The second movie is set for Dec 2012, which, if the first movie is good, will be torture! And as an aside - Dec 2011 is apparently the tenth anniversary of FOTR. Where has the time gone?!?

Even though del Toro is directing instead of PJ and therefore the films will have his stamp, they're going to try to make the five films flow together.

And since I was feeling rather cranky that PJ wasn't directing The Hobbit films himself, I was interested to read his comments on the subject: Having directed the LOTR Trilogy, I really felt that I put my heart and soul into dramatising this world and story, only a few years ago. The idea of going back in and essentially competing against my own movies, seemed to be an unsatsifying way to spend the next 5 years. However, I love Tolkien and care deeply about the movies we made. I couldn't bear the idea of somebody else making them without our involvement. Being a writer and producer is the perfect way for me to work here. ... Believe me, I thought long and hard about this, and what we're doing here will result in better movies, I promise you. And that's all that counts! Which I guess I can understand. Although will probably remain unconvinced until I see the final product!

Off to re-read The Hobbit now. I believe this will be the 832nd and 1/2 time.

I've been on a Harry Potter fic spree today, and thought I'd share the stories I really liked. They're all fairly short except for the one I noted.

The Unusual, Exceptional, and Statistically Remarkable Hermione Granger, Age 21 by magnetic_pole - Hermione/Pansy, but really a gen story about Hermione's reliance on statistics to make even the most personal decisions.

Out of the Cupboard Under the Stairs, also by magnetic_pole - Harry comes out to his friends, and their reactions are spot-on perfect. Especially Luna's.

Persistence of Memory by rose_whispers - In the present, Monica Wilkin's can't quite figure out why she's unhappy with her perfect life. In the past, Susan Granger has high hopes for her daughter. I can see this one making mothers cry. For heaven's sake, it almost made me cry!

Along the Way by edenfalling - Hermione, all grown up, struggles to balance her family life with her personal mandate to change the world.

Things You Shouldn’t Do at Christmas by akissinacrisis - Harry and Ginny, several years post-DH, have broken up, but they can't quite seem to let go. Nfic. This is the longish one, about 10k words.

The Little Ones by furiosity - Ginny, Molly, Luna, Neville save the Muggle-born first years from Carrow's reign of terror.

Summer Holidays by penknife - Hermione, the summer following DH.

Bad News, also by by penknife - sorry, can't spoil you on this one. Just go read it.

Slash, while not something I typically go looking for, doesn't bother me. Harry and Draco? Sure. Clark and Jimmy? Yeah, if you really want to, although Clark and Bruce seem like a better fit. House and Wilson, Hawkeye and BJ... my point is that I can see how a good writer can really do something with all these pairings.

But Bertie and Jeeves?

Bertie and Jeeves??

Please don't go there.
